Notes
About Traffic
- NEW
FOR 2007: As if driving in Chicago isn’t confusing
enough, they’ve gone and renamed a couple of the highways
near Schaumburg. I-90 between Rockford and O’Hare
is no longer the Northwest Tollway; it is now the Jane Addams
Memorial Tollway (referred to as “The Addams”).
Also, I-355 is no longer the North-South Tollway, but is
now Veterans Memorial Tollway. Also, note that by convention
time, the extension of I-355 down to I-80 will be open,
presenting a new option for people driving in from the south
and west.
- Driving
in Chicago is pretty much like driving in any other large
city, but you should remember that Schaumburg is actually
about 25 miles west of Chicago. You get the volume but not
necessarily the craziness of driving in the city.
- Rush
hours in Chicago are typically from 6:00 AM - 9:30 AM and
2:30 PM - 7 PM. This doesn't mean that traffic can't back
up at other times, unfortunately. Traffic is heavy during
these times and it is especially bad on Fridays. It helps
to keep a close eye on traffic and know your routnes. Some
suggestions:
- BRING
A MAP! Sure, Mapquest and Google Maps are OK for general
directions, but seriously: go to Wal Mart and drop a
couple bucks for a good road atlas.
- Traffic
reports are available every ten minutes (on the 8's)
on WBBM-AM (780
AM) and continuously on Channel 151 on Sirius
and Channel 217 on XM.
- If
you approaching from the east and south, be aware that
I-80/94 and I-80/I-294 are under construction and subject
to heavy delays. Consider using the Chicago Skyway (I-90)
as an alternate route ($2.50 toll), or US 30 if the
Skyway is bad as well. Surface streets near the IL/IN
state line can be a bit, um, exciting, and it is not
recommended to detour through them.
-
Unless you are taking the Chicago Skyway, we recommend
that you avoid the Dan Ryan Expressway and the Kennedy
Expressway (I-90/I-94) through downtown Chicago and
instead take the Tri-State Tollway (I-294). Likewise,
the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) between downtown Chicago
and I-294 should be avoided. The Tri-State Tollway will
cost slightly more, but the time and aggravation saved
will be worth it. Depending on traffic, it can sometimes
be faster to take I-290 west from I-294 to Schaumburg.
To do this, exit onto I-290 west and then follow the
directions for "FROM THE SOUTH" above.
- Tolls
are a fact of life in the Chicago area. You will need
cash! The tollway accepts IPASS and EZ-pass, though.
EXTREME
NAVIGATION
I-90
is backed up? Feel like getting creative? Well, here's some
directions for you. We offer these directions for your use at
your own risk; the directions above are by far the simplest,
though perhaps not the most direct. Here we go...
From
the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) Westbound:
-
Take the exit for Arlington Heights Rd. At the bottom of
the ramp, you want to be in the leftmost right turn lane.
-
Turn right, then go a few hundred feet and get in the left
turn lane.
- Turn
left onto Algonquin Rd.
- Stay
in the left lane and go 0.7 miles.
- Turn
left onto Golf Rd.
- Go
2.0 miles. You will pass under a bridge (I-290); turn right
at the second traffic light after the bridge, East Dr. The
Hyatt will be directly in front of you.
From
the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) Eastbound:
-
Take the exit for IL 59.
- At
the top of the ramp, turn right and go 1.3 miles on IL 59.
- Turn
left onto Golf Rd.
- Go
8.3 miles on Golf Rd. As you do this, as you approach the
hotel you will pass Meacham Rd., followed by a Firestone
and a LaSalle Bank on your right. Just past the La Salle
Bank, turn left onto East Dr. The Hyatt will be directly
in front of you.
